The Neutron Mean Life and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis

چکیده

We explore the effect of neutron lifetime and its uncertainty on standard big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). BBN describes cosmic production light nuclides, 1H, D, 3H+3He, 4He, 7Li+7Be, in first minutes time. The mean life τn has two roles modern calculations: (1) it normalizes matrix element for weak n↔p interconversions, (2) sets rate free decay after interactions freeze-out. review history interplay between measurements BBN, present a study sensitivity abundances to measurements. find that uncertainties dominate predicted 4He error budget, but these theory errors remain smaller than observations, even with dispersion recent For other predictions, contributes negligibly their budget. Turning problem around, we combine microwave background (CMB) determinations baryon density predict “cosmologically preferred” τn(BBN+CMB)=870±16s, which is consistent experimental determinations. show if future astronomical cosmological helium observations can reach an σobs(Yp)=0.001 mass fraction Yp, this could begin discriminate

Assessing Big-Bang nucleosynthesis.

Systematic uncertainties in the light-element abundances and their evolution make a rigorous statistical assessment difficult. However, using Bayesian methods we show that the following statement is robust: the predicted and measured abundances are consistent with 95% credibility only if the baryon-to-photon ratio is between 2× 10 and 6.5× 10 and the number of light neutrino species is less tha...

Big Bang Nucleosynthesis Calculation

I review standard big bang nucleosynthesis and some versions of nonstandard BBN. The abundances of the primordial isotopes D, He-3, and Li-7 produced in standard BBN can be calculated as a function of the baryon density with an accuracy of about 10%. For He-4 the accuracy is better than 1%. The calculated abundances agree fairly well with observations, but the baryon density of the universe can...

Testing Big Bang Nucleosynthesis

Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), along with the cosmic background radiation and the Hubble expansion, is one of the pillars of the standard, hot, big bang cosmology since the primordial synthesis of the light nuclides (D, He, He, Li) must have occurred during the early evolution of a universe described by this model. The overall consistency between the predicted and observed abundances of the li...
